Payne Carpets, Inc. was incorporated in 1982 by Frank Payne, who was its only employee. The company was originally employed by Contract Distributor’s Corporation, a national flooring and installation broker from New York, to run its Chicago Office. In the Early 1990’s Contract Distributor’s Corporation was sold and Frank Payne decided to separate from them and engage in business as Payne Carpets. Originally, Payne Carpets rented space and sub contracted its labor from County Flooring Systems. It was at this time that Frank Payne got to know the then Vice President of Sales at County Flooring Systems, Mike O’Connell. Payne Carpets and County Flooring Systems were to be merged in 1991 with Frank taking the reigns as President of the newly formed company. For a number of reasons and a bizarre set of circumstances the merger never occurred. Partially due to the failure of this merger County Flooring Systems was liquidated and five companies were spun off. Former County Employees found themselves catching on with these new companies at an incredible pace. Frank Payne was able to acquire the services of Mike O’Connell as an employee of Payne Carpets and moved to a small warehouse on Rohlwing Rd. in Addison, IL in July of 1992. Mike O'Connell In May of 1994, Frank Payne retired, selecting Mike O’Connell as his replacement and the new President of Payne Carpets, Inc. Frank asked to continue on with the company for a period of 5 years as a consultant. In May of 1999, Mike O’Connell made the decision to purchase Payne Carpets, inc. from Frank Payne and his financial partner; subsequently, changing the name of the company to PCI FlorTech, Inc. The decision was made to keep PCI as an homage to the original organization and including the FlorTech to distinguish ourselves as a new company with a new direction. Shortly, thereafter Mike O’Connell purchased our current building and moved the company to our present home at 910 W. National Ave. in Addison, IL. At this time, PCI FlorTech expanded its capabilities from the sales and installation of carpet to encompass the entire range of commercial resilient flooring products. This included vinyl composition tile, luxury vinyl, sheet vinyl, linoleum, laminates, wood, as well as specialty flooring products. This expansion was coupled with a rigorous effort to cross train and certify installers as well as adding new staff to accommodate these new areas of expertise. Since that time, PCI FlorTech, Inc. has become one of the premier commercial flooring contractors in the Midwest. Exploration of innovative new surfaces such as the 20,000 square feet of AlumaFloor installed at the McCormick Tribune Campus of The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), FreeAxez metal carpet tile (revolutionary low profile access flooring) and a company wide initiative to increase awareness and application of carpet reclamation were a natural progression for this forward thinking company. Today PCI FlorTech is the local leader in carpet reclamation, providing this service for its customers and extending this service to competitors in an effort to make the world a better place.
